Echad B'Lev.... v'echad b'peh.

Why are there so many fake smiles? Why everwhere I looked today, I saw stale smiles below staler eyes?

As I try to smile back, geniune to at least illicit some warmth, some life from those dead silent faces, I find my own smile fading.

Has the world gone so grey?

  • It's amazing. Even when people try to smile it is generally so obvious when they are faking.
The beauty of the hebrew language explains this. The word for face is panim, the work for insides is pnim. They are both essentially the same word. What's on your face reveals what's going on inside you.
Unfortunately there are a lot of sad and depressed people out there these days. Have you been reading the blogs out there?
I think what you are noticing is a direct result.

  • There's this pressure to smile and look happy that's uniquely American.
If you look at old photographs..you hardly ever see anyone smiling. Life was rotten so why the heck should I smile?
In my travels around the world I've found that iin other cultures..you only smile when you're happy about something, You don't need to smile everytime someone looks at you or says Hi.

  • Idealist....
I know I see them, I'm trying to figure out what to do better the issue.

    Frumgirl-
Even the fake ones are sad, but the sadness have seeped so deep that they can no longer remember what being happy was. Resentment spoils the taste of everything in their life.

    Dir Yid-
    I should be looking closer.

    David-
So next time I see my great aunt I should immediately frown? ;)

  • It is depressing for the one watching to see such sad smiles, but I think it is more depressing for the person smiling. I was thinking about this issue the other day and wondering if it's better to fake what other people want in certain situations. That's what these people are doing.
As depressing as it is to watch the pain they are feeling surface, if they didn't smile would you wonder why? Would any of us take the time to see why they aren't smiling? Maybe it's our fault they have fake smiles- they know the real ones won't matter anyway, so why not just give the people what they want and smile?

  • The Talmud says if you give some a smile its better then giving milk.

I always try to smile genuinely since I heard something on next weeks Parsha. R Chaim Shmulevitz says, that Yacob lost a yr of life for every letter in the verse when he spoke to Paroh and said basically he had a hard life. The question is why was he promised what Pharoh said as well, "Cama Shana Ata" How old are you" .. Answers RC, because Yacob Avinu looked sad and forlong, so that prompted Paro to say how old are you ? Hence his words were also attributed to Yacob

  • If she's frowning..you'll probably make her feel better by frowning with..than by smiling..
