and I'm questioning my own motives.

  • Absolutely.

    It seems* that the only way the above principle works is if we want it to be for the right reasons, but at the moment lack the motivation and so set up alternative motivations to get us to do the mitva.

    e.g. want to go to a shuir, just to lazy, ask someone to drive you so that you feel you have to go because the person is going out of their way.

    *[don't remember the source, will send memory bug after it, which will of course return in a couple of days, far too late to be of much use, but hey..]
