Running on Jewish Time

We all can define this in terms of hemlines and sleeve lengths. I'm intrested in a different definition.

Is this modesty?

My current working definition is that concealing that which does not need to be revealed. But there is much to be either articulated or defined in such a defintion. Prehaps I need a new definition entirely.

Maybe my question is what is actually modest behavior?

  • I happen to like your definition. Tznius come from the shoresh, tzena which means to hide.

  • I don't think it really means to hide- you aren't supposed to be ahamed of yourself. To be tznius you don't ever have to hide any part of yourself- you just have to know when the right time to show it is. It goes beyond clothing and thoughts. It's really your actions. I know a lot of girls who wear pants and think stealing is ok but are more tznius that some of the girls wearing knee socks who say that kindness makes the world go round.
Give up trying to define it- it's impossible. For every person in the world tznius means something else. You just need to find what it means for you.

  • Araya-

Just because you hide something doesn't mean that you're ashamed of it. That's the essence of secrets. When you only tell your family or a close friend, because, simply put it is too important, too personal to told to the rest of the world.

Why tell the world what you have on your SAT's. If they need to know, tell them. But if not.... why?

Modesty is having sufficent self-confidence to know you're own value without haveing to inform the rest of the world about it.
